Young Illustrator's Award

As principal art festival for contemporary illustrative and graphical art the ILLUSTRATIVE Berlin is contacting you both as artist and as part forum for designers and artists.

For the selection of the new participants of this year's exhibition a concourse is again on its way at the moment, the YOUNG ILLUSTRATORS AWARD.

YIA is now looking for young illustrators (between 20 and 40 years) to motivate them to participate in the concourse which is giving them the possibility to present their art works in an international field. The winner will be awarded by an internationally renowned jury comprising the leading representatives of graphic art magazines (Shift, Page, Id Pure, Novum, etc.). He will have the chance to create the new limited edition for SWATCH watches. The artists can present their works until August 31.

Above, is the latest book illustrated by my buddy Dave Zaboski and also a video of him drawing Gideon. He has been working on this project for some time and I am really proud of him. His daughter even contributed!

He has two blogs now...if you are interested in art, illustration and the creative process definitely check them out. He also teaches classes at the Esalen Institute.

300 Titles

I do believe I am probably the only person in visual effects who has not see 300 yet, but Yuco seems to have done an amazing job with the titles...check them out here!

300 the movie titles

In an electrifying color palette of red, white and black, the main-on-end title sequence combines film story battle motifs with the visual style of the graphic novel, complimenting director Zack Snyder’s (Dawn of the Dead) stylized approach of mixing live action footage with virtual backgrounds.

“I look at title sequences as part of the movie, not just as a way to get people’s names up on the screen,” explains Snyder. “I want you to feel that in some way it’s the end of the film but at the same time also the birth of the film, not only where it came from but also where it’s going. yU+co was able to capture that perfectly.”

yU+co’s involvement with 300 began early on in the development stage before any film was even shot. “We were privileged to be part of the process from the very beginning when Zach and producer Mark Canton asked us to help depict the story in a visual presentation for a pitch to Warner Brothers,” Yu said.

Go Yuco! ~Angie

Tower of Grantville

My buddy Jeremy Sahlman sent me this crazy, awesome, creative campaign he just finished at BuckLA. This guy is one of the most talented nutso technically savy dudes I have ever met. Evidently, Scion has this new want2besquare ad going on and they gave the artists at Buck free reign to make something visually interesting! Jeremy wrote it! I am so proud and so jealous!

Here is the link to the animation...

Oscar Grillo Blogs

After watching Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the 5 year old Oscar Grillo knew what he wanted to be. "No one explained it was animation, but I knew they were moving drawings and I knew I wanted to be an artist".

When he was 16 years old, Oscar spotted an advertisement for trainee animators and within weeks he was working in a studio making commercials.

Having moved to Europe, Oscar received a call in the early 1970's to work in london for a couple of weeks - he has stayed for 31 years!

By 1980 Oscar had spent 7 years working for Dragon Productions and received the Golden Palm award for best short film, "Seaside Woman". Oscar and Ted joined forces in 1981, and Klacto was born.

Oscar has been described as "among the top three animators in the county". "Many people think he's just an animator, but he's an all rounder". His partner Ted Rockley says of him "His design sense is unmatched". However, Oscar believes "I am a commercial artist, not a painter, but I'm one of the luckiest people because I get away with more".

Daily Monster

I don't usually post things that Jerry Beck are already posted on Cartoon Brew, but this is just so damn awesome I had to have it here in our blog archives. The artist - Stefan Bucher - blows some ink onto a piece of paper and creates a monster out of it. His own website has some great doodles and thoughts on it as well. Some much fun! ~Angie
